Studies of youth slang as a linguistic phenomenon in modern linguistics began relatively recently in the context of the study of English-speaking culture. Within the framework of English- language linguistics, the term "slang" is used, as a rule, to denote an uncodified language. In modern dictionaries, one can find interpretations of the word "slang" as a special speech of subgroups or subculturalism, as well as a layer of vocabulary widely used for informal communication. In Russian linguistics, slang is generally opposed to the literary norm. In the most generalized, the term "slang" is understood as a social kind of speech characterized, unlike the normative literary language, by specific vocabulary and phraseology, as well as by the special use of word-forming means. Youth slang is a special linguistic phenomenon characterized by the use of special vocabulary and expressions created by young people to indicate their interests, lifestyle and worldview. One of the important components of youth slang is English borrowings, which have become an integral part of its lexical arsenal. English, being an international language of communication, is becoming increasingly popular among young people all over the world, including in Russia. Many English words and expressions are now widely used in youth slang, reflecting trends such as globalization, internationalization and cultural mixing. In this article the authors l look at how English borrowings have become an integral part of youth slang, why they are so important for this phenomenon and how it affects the Russian language as a whole. The authors also analyze some of the most popular words and phrases in English used in youth slang, and consider their meanings and usage contexts.
