Analysis of plant-based bioactive compounds is challenging and a sample preparation step employing extraction/cleanup techniques is required. Extraction of active ingredients using deep eutectic solvents has been investigated in numerous applications due to their fascinating physico-chemical properties plus their short time extraction procedures. These green solvents also exhibit various pharmacological and biological properties and thus were extensively applied in drug delivery and pharmaceutical field. Recently, recovery of bioactive compounds after extraction using green solvents has gained an interest. In this review, developments related to the use of deep eutectic solvents for the extraction of bioactive compounds and their pharmaceutical applications are briefly discussed with a focus on studies reported from 2018 to 2022.
