N2 - The influence of nonmetallic inclusions on fracture and acoustic properties was studied for two high carbon steels differing in sulfur content. The steels were intended for manufacturing strings. Mechanical tests revealed that the steel of higher sulfur content contains coarse nonmetallic inclusions which promote crack formation and wire failure. The refined steel has no tendency to crack, possesses higher acoustic properties, and consequently, should be recommended for piano wire production.
