Interactions between metallic aluminum and mixture components in periclase-carbon refractories subjected to heat treatment are considered. The increase in heat treatment temperature of specimens causes an increase in porosity, the occurrence of new phases (Al4C3 and spinel), and the formation of a dense MgO zone.
