Additional professional education programs have recently become very popular both with university students and people who have already received higher education. The main goal of such programs is to improve existing knowledge, skills and abilities, to acquire and develop new competencies within a certain professional activity, as well as to master a new profession in a short period of time. Higher educational institutions pay much attention to additional professional education. Along with teaching students at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels, the departments organize additional professional education courses for various educational programs. As a rule, course participants are students of the university where the program is implemented, or the interested persons with higher education. This article discusses the role of additional professional education as one of the most important components of the educational process; the experience of opening and implementing the program «Translation from Russian into a foreign language in intercultural foreign language communications» by the Department of Foreign Languages and Translation of the Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin is described; the essence of the «intercultural communication» concept is revealed; a brief description of the program and the competencies that students acquire while studying on it is given; the reasons for the popularity of this program among foreign students of the Department of Foreign Languages and Translation of UrFU are analyzed; conclusions are drawn on the result of the successful implementation of this program.
