The analysis of the previously unpublished archival materials has brought to light the problem that has been insufficiently studied by Russian historians – representations of Soviet republics in Soviet documentary films of the 1930s. The so-called ‘kulturfilms' were a part of the Soviet cultural policy and were used by the government as ideological propaganda to promote the integration of regions within the USSR.
