In local power systems and end-users, the most promising is the use of various types of batteries, primarily lithium-ion batteries, which have received significant development in the last decade. However, some problems, such as the fire hazard of these batteries, have not yet been solved, and their cost remains high. The cheapest are the long-known and well-used lead-acid batteries. Based on the analysis of literature data, the article presents the characteristics of various batteries, assesses the current state of the market and prospects for the use of various batteries. It is shown that under current conditions, when used in stationary energy storage systems, lead-acid batteries are certainly competitive and often even have advantages over lithium-ion batteries due to low cost, proven technologies of operation and disposal and will remain so in the future for several decades.
