Digital technologies are increasingly affecting multiple professional spheres. The educational sphere is not an exception. Digital technologies are becoming an integral part of the training programmes of modern specialists at universities for the formation and development of digital competencies. The demands of employers have led to a revision of the training of translators at the Department of Foreign Languages of Ural Federal University. The problem of developing a methodology of the formation of digital translator competence for students of linguistic educational programmes has been set. The authors of the article consider the digital competence of a translator as a necessary element of the professional competence of a modern translator. The authors of the article consider digital competence of the translator to be an indispensable element of professional competence. As such, it is multicomponent and includes technical, information organisational, and communication parts. The stage-by-stage methodology described in the paper is aimed at developing translators’ digital competence; it resides in sequential mastery of various disciplines and trains linguistic and translation skills alongside with digital skills thus ensuring stable development of its every component. The Department of Foreign Languages of Ural Federal University has created an educational programme “Translation in a Digital Environment”, which provides simultaneous, step-by-step development of linguistic and digital competencies for students studying in the direction of 45.02.03 “Linguistics”. While maintaining the disciplines of the linguistic and translation module, the module “Information Technology in Translation” implementing the new methodology has been added to the curriculum. The content of each discipline meets the goals and objectives of forming a certain component of the translator’s digital competence. The article describes the disciplines that form the translator’s digital competence: “Information technologies in Linguistics”, “Documentary Support of Translation in a Digital Environment”, “Programming Languages”, “Digital Management of Language Data in Translation”, “Professional Post-editing of Machine Translation”. The methodology of step-by-step formation of digital competence through mastering the disciplines of the digital module should increase the effectiveness of future translators’ interaction with the digital environment by providing effective formation of each of the components of the translator’s digital competence.
