In this article, the authors consider the importance of mental states and volitional qualities in athletes of team sports, which are of particular importance in modern sports, since sports success is achieved by coherence of actions, emotional tone, interest, comfort, perseverance. Each athlete is responsible for the entire team. Based on this, the purpose of the study is to determine the relationship between mental states and volitional qualities in athletes. The study involved 482 adolescent athletes aged 14-17 years old involved in team sports (football, basketball, hockey, water polo, Nordic combined). In the course of empirical research, results were obtained indicating the existence of positive and moderate relationships between mental activity and persistence; selfcontrol and perseverance, as well as negative and moderate relationships between mental activity and self-control; perseverance and self-control. Mental activation, tension and comfort have an average degree of severity, and interest and emotional tone, a high degree of severity; the average level of self-control and perseverance among athletes prevails. The practical significance of the study lies in the fact that its results can be used in psychological counseling of athletes and their parents, coaches, for psycho-prophylaxis, as well as for the development of psycho-corrective programs in order to work out mental states and develop volitional qualities in team sports athletes.
