The article suggests a specific turn in considering the problem of autobiography in fiction. We consider not the author, but one of the characters to be the subject of an autobiography. The study is based on the novel "The Death of the Heart" by Elizabeth Bowen, a British writer. The diary of the main character of the novel - Portia is considered as a means of constructing her own narrative, her subjectivity.
