The paper considers the concepts of “information culture”, “information literacy” and “information worldview”. A conclusion is made about the high level of penetration of information technologies into the life of modern youth, but at the same time about an insufficient level of information literacy and information worldview in the youth environment. On the basis of quantitative sociological research, key threats to modern youth emerging in the information space are identified. The following key problems of modern young people are outlined: Internet dependence, breaking of real social ties and their substitution by virtual ones, loss of personal freedom, personal information leakage, involvement into criminal and destructive groups by means of the Internet. It was noted that the more actively the virtual space replaces real social ties, the more new threats are fixed in the Internet space. The criminal activity on the Internet was found to be focused on teenagers. The dependence of the level of information culture on the age among young people is figured out. The younger the respondents are, the lower their level of information culture is. It is concluded that social norms in virtual space lag behind specific practices. Thus, modern society needs to develop rules and norms of behavior in its new environment (the virtual space) more actively. It is recommended to develop more intensely the norms of information culture and cultural competence among young people. Educational programs should cover the issues of information literacy, including information security. All organizations working with young people need to boost their efforts to raise awareness concerning personal information security, especially in the youth environment.
