The article is devoted to status of ainu during Meiji epoch. It is based on the analysis of legislation and studies by Japanese, Western and Russian scholars. The author shows that Japanese governmental policy was directed to the regulation of ainu`s life and their assimilation. The author concludes that despite this policy ainu saved their ethical identity and elements of cultural special characteristics.
