The philosophical traditions are variously typologized by the historians of philosophy. Austrian philosophy has largely been analyzed either in the context of its religious background or in the context of national identity formation. The article presents the historical philosophical discussions on the unique features of Austrian philosophy and aims at identifying the viable methodology for the study of this singular phenomenon. The historical and cultural complexity of the multiethnic region renders any generalizations inconclusive. The author concludes that this historical philosophical indeterminacy exposes the current practices of recognition of philosophical schools and traditions in history of philosophy.
