An authorized translation of Chapter 7 of the book «Theory of Architecture» by the architect and theorist N. A. Salingaros, which is actually a textbook on the design of adaptive buildings and urban spaces, is given. Based on life science data and complex systems theory, the author of the book proves the need for consistent scaling and connectivity of all elements of the urban environment, including sidewalks and floors, «prompting» the location and direction of movement in space to the brain. He formulated recommendations for the architectural design of pavements that meet the structure of the human psyche.
