Goals/objectives The aim of this work is to find an alternative approach to the needs, allowing a different approach to solving the problems of the consumer society. The establishment of a system of satisfaction of needs, not whirling the «wheel of overconsumption» Methodology The methodological basis of this study was the scientific works of domestic and foreign scientists, focusing on consumer behavior, consumer society and human needs, scientific monographs, textbooks, dissertation research, articles in periodicals, statistics. Conclusion The satisfaction of both material and spiritual needs can lead to the aggravation of the problems of the so-called consumer society and the consequences of its existence. Thus, the necessity of differentiation of needs is determined not so much on spiritual and material, but on those that "twist the wheel of overconsumption", and those that break it conditionally denote them as twisting and discrete.
