The article seeks to define the essential characteristics of photography through the analytical deployment of its subjective and objective foundations, which are specified as gaze and reality respectively. As a result of the analysis, the problematic character of these forms is revealed, their internal inconsistency finds theoretical grounding in contemporary philosophical conception of the crisis of representation. The question of the photography’s nature is solved in a neutral philosophical field of the problem of the Other.
